Gotland Sheep Breeders Association of North America

The Association

The Gotland Sheep Breeders Association of North America was established in 2006 to promote and enhance Gotland sheep by closely monitoring the genetic pool of the breed and establishing high breed standards for its members.

Gotland sheep are not a rare breed worldwide. They were introduced to North America in 2005 through a cross-breeding program using artificial insemination and imported purebred Gotland semen from the Whitehall flock in the UK. In 2006, there were fewer than thirty 50% Gotland sheep in North America, and none that meet the percentage requirements for registration. For 2007 lambing, approximately 91 ewes were inseminated with purebred Gotland semen, including some 50% ewes.

The GSBANA Mission Statement is:

To promote and protect the Gotland sheep breed in North America. Emphasis will be placed on establishing and maintaining a population of healthy and robust Gotland sheep in North America who conform to the established European breed standards. It is of primary importance to maintain the unique qualities of the Gotland breed.
